More magical than Hogwarts, more detailed than Middle Earth, the moonlit groves of Shakespeare's beloved comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" have charmed audiences for centuries. It is in these woods that four young lovers become caught in a quarrel between the king and queen of the faeries. Starring Katy Walters from TV's "American Horror Story" as Puck, L.A.-based Cupcake Theater's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" features custom costumes and props created by renowned L.A.-based artist Aaron Camacho and the added twist of unconventional casting. When a hapless troupe of local actors rehearsing a play in the forest also gets swept up in the madness, the comical snarl of spells seems impossible to sort out. But with faeries and sprites all around, it just takes a little more magic and, as Puck puts it, "all is mended." [less-]

Based on true events in playwright Henry Jaglom's father's life, "Train to Zakopane" uncovers humanity in -- of all places -- prejudice. It's 1928, and a successful Russian businessman is crossing Poland on a train during a time of extreme anti-Semitism. So when he meets an enchanting young nurse in the Polish army on this same train, and discovers that not only is she also taken with him but is a fierce anti-Semite, he must decide whether or not to reveal that he's Jewish. He must also choose whether to side with love or hate, finding within himself either a deep well of compassion or intolerance. A true story of love and hate, "Train to Zakopane" is an intimate exploration of the human condition. [less-]

See the classic fairy tale come to life on stage in the intimate Little Theater LA. This musical adaptation by the Los Angeles Children's Theater emphasizes the moral high ground by exploring the theme of bullying through the classic tale of Cinderella, who, even though she has a heart of gold, must toil all day under the smirking demands of her awful stepsisters -- and then sleep among the cinders come night. Cinderella finds a way to make it to the Prince's ball, though, and even manages to capture his heart with her character and sweet nature. Yes, she loses one of her shoes in the process, but what she gains is more precious than all the gold in the kingdom. [less-]

Emmy Award-winning writer Ron Hutchinson's clever behind-the-scenes comedy, "Moonlight and Magnolias", follows producer David O. Selznick, director Victor Fleming and writer Ben Hecht as they race the clock to rework the screenplay for the soon-to-be-shot epic "Gone With the Wind". In real-life 1939, under intense pressure to deliver a cinematic blockbuster of the best-selling book, Selznick fired his director and locked himself, new director Fleming and writer Hecht (who hadn't read the book) in his office, subsisting mostly on bananas and peanuts. "Moonlight and Magnolias" at Camarillo Skyway Playhouse is a fast-paced, funny look at the old-school Hollywood system, revealing all of the drama that hit the fan long before Rhett and Scarlett hit the screen in one of the most successful and beloved films of all time. What if someone suddenly told you that you're running out of time -- and could even tell you precisely how much time you've got left? That's the conundrum at the heart of City Garage's irreverent new comedy "Timepiece" by playwright Charles Duncombe, writer of last year's hit "Caged". A parade of absurd characters fill the stage, including Betty (who thought she had all the time in the world to fall in love) to Bebe (who wanders in to announce that time has no meaning) and Billie (who emerges from a refrigerator with ideas of her own). It all comes to a head as Superman -- yes, Superman -- holds them all hostage, demanding compassion at gunpoint. As witty as it is silly, illogical as it is poignant, "Timepiece" offers a view of love, life and what happens when the clock finally stops ticking. [less-]

Childhood memories are supposed to be a treasury of golden moments. But for some people, the story of their childhood was darkened by the Holocaust. "Silent Witnesses" attempts to rescue the testimony of these young survivors of genocide. Writer and performer Stephanie Satie has transformed actual interviews and conversations with elderly people who, as children, hid from the Nazis into a stirring one-woman show. Through Satie's captivating performance, you can experience the stories both of the children who made it through that terrible tragedy ... and of the 1.5 million children who perished. Anita Khanzadian directs Satie ("The Wonder Years") in "Silent Witnesses" at L.A.'s Odyssey Theatre. [less-]

Told through inventive and heartrending songs by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown ("Parade"), "The Last Five Years" is a two-person show that navigates the ins and outs -- and ups and downs -- of a marriage. This is the story of a couple's five-year relationship, from the thrilling pangs of new love to their painful final separation. There is, however, a twist: The man relives the relationship from beginning to end, while the woman relates their story in reverse. The two characters' stirring and emotional timelines converge only once -- at their wedding in the middle of the show. Rubicon Theatre presents this clever look at love, marriage and memory in a new production that stars Ashley Fox Linton (Broadway national tours of "Wicked" and "Les Misérables") and Louis Pardo ("Jesus Christ Superstar" national tour).
