This night of rapid-fire productions explores everyday life from a number of angles, all of them funny. When Lisa Dillman was asked what inspired "American Wee-Pie", her 2013 comedy that's now being staged by Theatre 40 of Beverly Hills, she cited three things. First, the recent downturn in the economy caused many of her friends to lose their jobs, forcing them -- and Dillman -- to consider what should comprise "act two" of life. Second, she noticed that, despite the recession, fancy cupcake shops were opening all over the city. And, lastly, an old memory kept resurfacing: Once, when she was young, Dillman caught the gaze of a stranger in Union Station the second before he keeled over and died on the platform. From such disparate strands, Dillman has woven "American Wee-Pie", which follows a middle-aged textbook editor back to his hometown for a funeral. Once there, however, the editor quickly finds himself headed off in unexpected directions. Don't miss this heartbreaking comedy about life's second acts -- and the persistent power of small surprises. [less-]

Disney's new live-action feature "Cinderella" brings the classic fairy tale to life for a whole new generation of "happily ever after" fans. Inspired by timeless images from Disney's 1950 animated masterpiece, "Cinderella" features a cast of Oscar-acknowledged stars, including Cate Blanchett as the dreaded stepmother, director Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother. "Downton Abbey" star Lily James steps into the glass slippers as Cinderella and Richard Madden, of "Game of Thrones" fame, plays her prince. The magical transformation takes place at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre. As you wait for the curtains to raise, you'll see images spring to life during an immersive light and projection show accompanied by a live organist. Plus, only with Disney's "Cinderella" can your little princess-lovers see Disney's new animated short "Frozen Fever". Making the event even more magical, everyone's favorite snowman, Olaf, will stop by in person to introduce the short. Before leaving the theater, make sure to check out the film's glass slipper, displayed with other props and costumes used in the filming of the movie. [less-]

When Rodgers and Hammerstein, perhaps the greatest composing team in history ("The Sound of Music, South Pacific"), got together to adapt the enchanting fairy-tale story of Cinderella, the results were magical. A new book by five-time Tony nominee Douglas Carter Beane ("Sister Act, Xanadu") presents a delightfully romantic and hilarious take on the tale, featuring an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations and everything you love about the story -- the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball -- plus some surprising new twists. Rediscover Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved songs, including "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible/It's Possible" and "Ten Minutes Ago," in this outrageously fun, Tony-winning musical for dreamers of all ages. Tim Robbins and the Actors' Gang have always been on the cutting edge of Los Angeles theater, and their Prison Project is just another example: They conduct workshops inside California prisons, which is where they met "Cambodian Son" Kosal Kiev, Phnom Penh's premier poet. An amazingly talented spoken word poet, Kiev's family fled Cambodia when he was 1, and then in 2011, he was forcibly returned to Cambodia as a 32-year-old criminal alien. But in 2012, he received the biggest news of his life: The ex-inmate had been chosen to represent the Kingdom of Cambodia at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The documentary "Cambodian Son" follows his journey -- both physical and psychological, as Kiev attempts to answer the central question in his life: How do you survive when you belong nowhere? Stay after for a Q&A with the film's director at The Actors' Gang at Ivy Substation. [less-]

The National Theatre of Scotland teams up with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Co. for this acclaimed "Macbeth" sequel that's packed with more swordplay, intrigue and political backstabbing than a "Game of Thrones" binge-watching marathon. Written by a Scot and set after Malcolm defeats Macbeth in battle, "Dunsinane" is a highly charged, expertly conceived drama that examines the struggle of an invader to grasp local customs and politics while trying to restore order. While the commanding officer Siward tries to install a new ruler, the English army is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and growing discontent amongst the troops. Praised as "imaginative and ferociously topical" ("Chicago Tribune") and "nothing short of witchcraft" ("Chicago Sun-Times"), Greig's work provides an analogy to the nation-building attempts in Afghanistan and Iraq, giving dramatic perspective to our own times. "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain," says Eliza Doolittle, rather "loverly". Hooray, thinks phoneticist Henry Higgins, who's made a bet to transform Doolittle into a society lady -- from a cockney flower girl. But Higgins doesn't count on his "creation" having a mind of her own. George Bernard Shaw's most popular play, "Pygmalion" is perhaps more widely known as the inspiration for the musical "My Fair Lady". This witty tale from the master playwright both delighted and scandalized audiences in 1912, and this fresh interpretation at The Pasadena Playhouse remains a great battle-of-the-sexes and social-class comedy. The blood will flow once again during "Carrie: The Musical", a staged retelling of Stephen King's best-selling novel. Its original production in 1988 was a legendary Broadway flop. Fans of interrogation scenes in "Law & Order" and other cop dramas will appreciate this play where the stakes are even higher than a murder in Central Park West. Based on the true story of the failed bombing attempt of an Israeli airliner in 1986, Lucile Lichtblau's play "The English Bride" has only three characters: an Israeli agent, an Englishwoman and her Arab lover. As the agent tries to get to the bottom of the terrorist attempt, you'll learn things about the characters that you never quite expected. See this play at The Road on Magnolia and hang out in that hazy area between truth and lies. [less-]

Soon the newly formed South Florida Christian Militia launches an insurgency in the Everglades to oust the Chinese. But just how far will they go to keep the United States united? Ferrigni blends "redneck caricature with hip-hop anarchy and giddy pessimism to create a suicide vest of a satire" ("New York Magazine") in this darkly comedic dystopia, which now comes to L.A.'s Sacred Fools Theater.
