What happens after "happily ever after?" Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning musical "Into The Woods" skillfully interweaves and reimagines several classic fairy tales into one epic story that goes beyond the happy endings to show what happens when a fairy tale world gets real. For its production, Burbank Community Theater adds a steampunk approach to the costuming and sets, an 18-piece live orchestra and cast members who are professional opera singers from companies such as LA Opera and Pacific Opera Project. This fresh twist on the Brothers Grimm brings together Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame), a Baker, his Wife and, of course, the Witch. But this time around, the beloved storybook characters take on startling complexity as they discover that wishes come with a price. Sondheim's score features such unforgettable songs as "No One Is Alone," "Children Will Listen" and "Giants in the Sky." [less-]

Jordan captivates with his spellbinding storytelling ability as he reflects on his mother's somewhat clueless reaction to the news that he was foregoing college to become a female impersonator, all the way to more recently, when she accompanied him for his performance on a gay cruise for more than 2,000 men. A twister may never come to spirit you off to Oz, a wardrobe may never appear to transport you to Narnia, but passage to the realm of the faeries is still possible and all you have to do is attend "A Midsummer Night's Dream". More magical than Hogwarts, more detailed than Middle Earth, the moonlit groves of Shakespeare's beloved comedy have charmed audiences for centuries. It is in these woods that four young lovers become caught in a quarrel between the king and queen of the faeries. When a hapless troupe of local actors rehearsing a play in the forest also gets swept up in the madness, the comical snarl of spells seems impossible to sort out. But with faeries and sprites all around, it just takes a little more magic and, as Puck puts it, "all is mended." Cupcake Theater takes you deep inside this world of love, mischief and magic in an intimate theater setting for a truly wonderful experience. [less-]

Based on true events in playwright Henry Jaglom's father's life, "Train to Zakopane" uncovers humanity in -- of all places -- prejudice. It's 1928, and a successful Russian businessman is crossing Poland on a train during a time of extreme anti-Semitism. So when he meets an enchanting young nurse in the Polish army on this same train, and discovers that not only is she also taken with him but is a fierce anti-Semite, he must decide whether or not to reveal that he's Jewish. He must also choose whether to side with love or hate, finding within himself either a deep well of compassion or intolerance. A true story of love and hate, "Train to Zakopane" is an intimate exploration of the human condition. [less-]

Up-and-coming playwright Joshua Crone explores the rules of solitary confinement in his new play "Solitaire". Jeremy Stills is a young Marine imprisoned for the torture/death of a suspected terrorist. As Jeremy struggles to maintain his sanity, guilt manifests itself in the form of a mute Arab who plays game after game of solitaire -- a strange interlude to a series of increasingly surreal and violent visitations from the past and present. Crone is himself a former Marine with theater credits in London, Krakow, and Berlin and film credits from the Polish National Film School in Lodz and the American Film Institute. In "Solitaire", he skillfully weaves "found footage" into the narrative using such innovative techniques as holographic projection on glass. The project also features a symbol-laden and visually dynamic cell designed by AFI production design fellow Daniel Frank, original music by four-time Grammy-winning songwriter Jonathan Crone, and stop-motion animation by award-winning Polish animator Natalia Brozynska.
